Firefighters Urge: Don't Fly Drones, Let Us Fight the Fire

The Croatian Firefighting Association issued an urgent appeal on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, urging citizens to stop using drones to film fire sites. They warned that such behavior directly endangers the safety of firefighting aircraft crews and ground firefighters, and could lead to a complete halt of aerial firefighting operations.

Incident Near Vrsi Halts Operation

The warning was prompted by a recent incident in the settlement of Vrsi in Zadar County. Due to a drone spotted above the fire site, the firefighting aircraft operation had to be urgently suspended. The Firefighting Association emphasizes that this is a clear example of how irresponsible behavior by individuals directly hampers firefighting efforts and prolongs response times.

Risk of Collision and Operation Interruption

Experts warn that a drone striking a firefighting aircraft could cause serious damage or even bring down the aircraft. If crews spot a drone in their operational zone during flight, procedures require an immediate halt to firefighting operations. This greatly complicates the situation on the ground and could have fatal consequences for property and human lives.

Do Not Disrupt Emergency Services

In addition to the appeal about drones, firefighters are urging citizens not to approach fire sites on foot or by vehicle to film or take photos. Such behavior disrupts emergency services and exposes curious onlookers to unnecessary danger. Additionally, boats approaching areas where aircraft are scooping water from the sea or lakes also hinder the crews' work.

The Croatian Firefighting Association reiterated that any unauthorized drone filming of fires will be reported to the police. They ask citizens not to interfere with firefighting efforts out of curiosity or for entertainment, and remind them to immediately call firefighters at 193 if they spot a fire.
