  • The water at Zagreb's Jarun and Bundek lakes is of excellent quality and suitable for swimming.
  • Regular analyses show that nearly 90 percent of samples receive the highest rating.
  • Swimmers are satisfied with the water's cleanliness and temperature but complain about broken showers.

As temperatures in the shade exceed 35 degrees, Zagreb's Jarun and Bundek lakes have become a haven for numerous citizens seeking refreshment. Official analyses confirm what swimmers themselves notice: the water is of excellent quality and perfectly suitable for swimming.

Swimmers Delighted, but Infrastructure Lags

At Jarun, reporters found several satisfied swimmers. "The water is great! I'm here with my granddaughter and we're enjoying ourselves," said Ksenija. Bernard, who came with his children, shares the same opinion. "I decided to come here with the kids in the morning, a little outing, a swim. I checked the water quality and it says it's excellent," he stated. However, Gabrijel, a regular visitor, notes that there are fewer people this year. "The water is great, just too few people. I come often, this year a bit less; the problem is I can't get closer to the lake by car," he complained. Although the water received a passing grade, the infrastructure did not. Swimmers complain about broken showers.

The situation is similar at Bundek. "The water is warm and clean, not choppy, not dirty, no trash on it! Actually, it looks great," Anđela enthused. Although crowds are not like those at seaside beaches, lifeguards ensure swimmers' safety.

Nine Out of Ten Samples Earn Top Rating

Regular water analyses, conducted every two weeks, yield excellent results. Sanja Tolić, head of the Department for Health Safety and Water Quality at the Teaching Institute of Public Health "Dr. Andrija Štampar," explained the control process.

"Water is analyzed for two microbiological indicators: intestinal enterococci and E. coli. Based on their levels, the water is rated as excellent or good quality. So far, nearly 90 percent of samples have been of excellent quality."

In addition to water quality, experts emphasize the importance of responsible behavior among swimmers. It is recommended to cool down gradually before entering the lake, to be cautious of depth, and to familiarize oneself with the pool rules.

Season Lasts Until Mid-September

The swimming season at Zagreb's lakes officially lasts until September 15, 2026, giving residents more than a month to enjoy aquatic pleasures within the city itself.
