Istrian Fire Chief: Fireworks Ban Takes Effect Immediately

Due to extreme heat, prolonged drought, and exceptionally high fire load, the Istrian County Firefighting Association issued an emergency order on August 4, 2026. Until further notice, firefighting teams will no longer be involved in approving or providing support for pyrotechnics and other outdoor events involving open flames.

The order was signed by the county fire chief, Dino Kozlevac, citing Article 19 of the Firefighting Act. Fire unit leaders at all levels are responsible for implementing this measure.

Preventive Measures in the Fight Against Fire Danger

The rationale behind the decision states that meteorological conditions in Istria are extremely unfavorable, with high fire load and an increased number of fires in recent days. According to the competent authorities, it is necessary to introduce additional protective steps to minimize the possibility of new fire outbreaks.

This emergency measure comes after a series of serious fires in which firefighters, supported by water bombers and other air assets, made extraordinary efforts for days to contain the blaze and protect citizens, their property, and natural resources.

After a weekend filled with numerous interventions, Kozlevac also issued a direct appeal to the public:

Don't play with fire; report any smoke immediately!

What the Order Means in Practice

Although the order itself does not constitute a formal legal ban on fireworks, in practice it means that fire brigades in Istria County will no longer issue approvals or provide security for such events until the fire risk drops to an acceptable level.

The Firefighting Association once again reiterated its appeal to citizens and visitors of Istria for maximum responsibility and caution, emphasizing that in the current circumstances, the protection of human lives, property, and nature is an absolute priority.
