Entering a new era of technical regulations always raises questions about the balance of power, and 2026 is no exception. After testing in Bahrain and the arrival of Cadillac as the eleventh team, answers came as early as Melbourne. Mercedes demonstrated formidable form, securing a one-two finish with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in the top two positions, ahead of the Ferrari drivers.
However, the Silver Arrows' dominance did not last. The competition quickly caught up, and McLaren claimed their first win of the season at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, thanks to Lando Norris. The fight for the top of the standings is becoming increasingly uncertain as the season progresses.
Although Russell celebrated in Australia, Kimi Antonelli took center stage as early as the next race in China. The young Italian secured his first Formula 1 victory in Shanghai, then strung together an impressive run of five consecutive triumphs. That streak also earned him a place in the history books, at the Japanese Grand Prix, he became the youngest championship leader in the history of the sport, at just 19 years, 7 months, and 4 days old.
His journey has not been without challenges. A mechanical failure in Barcelona resulted in a retirement, and reliability issues at Silverstone left him out of the points. Despite this, Antonelli has not relinquished his lead in the overall standings. Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, told F1.com that he believes the teenager has grown from the "tough learnings" of his rookie season in 2025.
His advantage over his closest rival, Lewis Hamilton, now stands at 50 points, with Russell a further nine points behind.
After a challenging first season at Ferrari without a single podium, Lewis Hamilton finally had his moment in 2026. His first win for the Scuderia came at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, where the Briton dominated the race and celebrated with a commanding lead of 19.561 seconds.
This was his first victory since the Belgian Grand Prix in 2024. Asked where this win ranks among his record 106 career victories, Hamilton simply described it to F1.com as "something else." Before his triumph in Barcelona, he had finished second in Canada and Monaco, signaling his return to the front.
The season of driver transfer rumors, known as the "silly season," started unusually early this year. As early as May 2026, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu had to strongly deny speculation about a split with Esteban Ocon, calling the claims to F1.com "absolute bull****."
