Viktor Hallgrímsson, the 26-year-old Icelandic goalkeeper, has officially pledged his future to Barcelona. As the Catalan club announced on Tuesday, the new contract will run until June 30, 2029, thereby resolving the goalkeeping question for the long term.
Hallgrímsson arrived at Barcelona last summer from Poland's Orlen Wisla Plock and immediately established himself as a key figure in the team led by coach Carlos Ortega. His outstanding saves were instrumental in winning all the trophies in his debut season.
"I'm very happy. That was always my goal when I signed the two-year contract: to work so I could renew for a longer period. It's been my dream club for many years, since I was young, and the first year was fantastic," Hallgrímsson told club media.
His dominance in goal is backed by the numbers. He finished the Liga Nexus Energía Asobal season with the best save percentage in the league, an impressive 37%. In the Champions League, he also ranked among the best, joining the group of goalkeepers with over 30% successful saves, with a precise 30.96%.
The decision to extend his stay was a logical step after adapting well to all aspects of life in Barcelona. "The city, the club, my teammates-I like everything here. I also know the goalkeeping coach, Tomas Svensson, very well. Both he and Carlos Ortega have been great this year. Everything has worked out perfectly in this first year. My partner has also been very good on a personal level, so it was hard to imagine myself anywhere else," he added.
Hallgrímsson's stay coincides with the arrival of Spanish international Sergey Hernández, who has also signed a contract until 2029. With these moves, the club has fully "locked down" the goalkeeping position for the next three seasons. The Icelandic goalkeeper is looking forward to working with his new colleague, about whom he has heard only praise from his national teammates who played with him in Magdeburg.
"It will be fun to work together. I've only heard positive things about him... He's a fun guy, likes to talk, and that's good for me because I'm shyer. I think it will be a great combination. He's also a great goalkeeper, with a different style from mine. It will be a good mix," Hallgrímsson concluded.
