First comprehensive repair of the arch structure since 1972, LED lighting installed, and 400 square meters of ceramic tiles replaced.
The Kantrida Pools in Rijeka have successfully completed extensive renovation works, totaling €366,190. The project, which ran from April 20 to July 7, 2026, included the repair of the iconic arch structure, modernization of lighting, and partial renovation of the outdoor Olympic pool shell. Funds were secured in the City of Rijeka's budget for this year.
The significance of this undertaking lies in the fact that it marks the first comprehensive repair and anti-corrosion protection of the steel arch structure since the outdoor Olympic pool was built in 1972. The value of the anti-corrosion works alone amounted to €302,500 including VAT.
The project was comprehensive, including the repair of reinforced concrete foundations, metalwork repairs to steel arch elements, lighting platforms, inspection stairs, and railings. All steel elements were sandblasted and a complete corrosion protection system was applied, ensuring long-term safety and stability of the structure.
During the works, the existing scaffolding was used to replace old floodlights with a new generation of LED lighting. This investment brings a dual benefit: it provides better lighting conditions for training and competitions while reducing electricity consumption and maintenance costs. It is estimated that the investment in LED lighting will pay for itself in less than three years.
After the scaffolding was removed, partial repair of the pool shell followed. Approximately 400 square meters of damaged ceramic tiles were replaced, further enhancing the safety, functionality, and visual appeal of this significant Rijeka sports facility.
