Bernardo Silva officially began his adventure at Real Madrid on Monday. The Portuguese midfielder arrived from Manchester City on a free transfer, and his first day on the job included a medical and two training sessions under the watchful eye of coach José Mourinho. After a demanding day, the new 'Royal Club' player gave an extensive interview to the club's television channel, in which he revealed his football idols, and among them was Luka Modrić.
Silva did not hide his excitement about coming to Madrid. "This is a special moment, and I'm overjoyed to be here. There's no need to waste words about the club; its history speaks for itself," he said, adding that he had no doubts. "When Real Madrid called, it was impossible to say no. I didn't think for a second."
He stressed that he is glad to be closer to his family and Portugal, in a similar culture, but emphasized that it is a privilege to fulfill a dream and play for "the best club in football history." With his arrival, he wants to help the team continue winning. "I'm here to make my contribution and continue the winning streak," he stated.
Commenting on his first training session, he admitted that the intensity was high, but he already feels at home. "I'm tired; the first training session was tough. I'm glad I met my teammates, some of whom I already know well because we've often played against each other," said Silva.
He specifically spoke about working with the legendary compatriot on the bench. "Mourinho is a coach who means a lot to Portuguese football. We followed his teams as kids; he always promoted Portugal at the highest level. I'm happy to have the opportunity to work with him and learn from him."
When asked about his football idols, Silva singled out three greats, giving a special place to the Croatian captain. "I have several. Zidane is definitely one of them, then Rui Costa, because of Benfica and the national team, and Modrić, who is a huge role model for me and an example on and off the pitch," revealed the Portuguese midfielder.
He added that Zidane is probably among the five best players of all time and that he followed him as a child because of a similar position on the field. He described himself as a worker who strives to make his teammates better and who can adapt to various roles. "I can adapt to various roles, and I'll be ready for whatever Real needs from me," he concluded.
