The Mayor of Koprivnica has decided to allow free pool access over the weekend, while the DHMZ warns that the heat will continue into next week.
Due to the red alert issued by the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) and the forecast heat wave, the City of Koprivnica and the municipal company GKP Komunalac Koprivnica have decided to offer free access to the Cerine City Pools for all residents of Koprivnica and its surrounding settlements this weekend.
The decision was made by the Mayor of Koprivnica, and as reported by the portal Klikaj.hr, this measure is a direct response to the expected very high temperatures that will affect northwestern Croatia.
Petra Mikuš Jurković, Deputy Director General of DHMZ, stated on HTV's central news that no significant cooling is expected in the next ten days. "Looking ten days ahead, there is no sign of an extreme temperature drop. The heat will very likely continue throughout the entire next week," she warned.
According to Teleskop.hr, the red alert is in effect for the Adriatic coast, the Dalmatian hinterland, and the Zagreb region, while the rest of the country is under an orange alert. In Knin, temperatures reached as high as 39.7 degrees Celsius in the shade.
Mikuš Jurković explained that temperatures in direct sunlight are at least five degrees higher than those recorded in meteorological shelters at a height of two meters. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and to drink plenty of fluids.
"Temperatures in the sun are at least five degrees higher, making it extremely important to avoid prolonged outdoor stays, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., stay in the shade, and drink enough fluids," she said on HTV's news.
The Deputy Director of DHMZ also emphasized the importance of nighttime temperatures. "The very high danger from the heat wave applies to both maximum and minimum temperatures. It's important how much the body can recover during the night," she said. Over the weekend, temperatures could be one to two degrees higher than in previous days.
Despite the extreme heat, Teleskop.hr highlights two mitigating factors: the air is relatively dry, which reduces the feeling of mugginess, and nights on the continent are cooler, allowing the body to rest. The heat wave could persist, and Mikuš Jurković concluded: "I don't have very good news. There's no sign of cooler and unstable air, and the alerts will very likely remain in effect throughout the entire next week."
