An extraordinary discovery was made by a citizen in Međimurje while cleaning a family home on Friday, July 31, 2026. Among the belongings, they found a "CZ" M70AB2 assault rifle, six accompanying magazines, and as many as 116 rounds of rifle ammunition.
Instead of panicking, the citizen acted responsibly and immediately notified the police. Officers safely took possession of the weapon and ammunition, storing them at the Međimurje Police Department.
In light of this incident, the Međimurje Police Department issued a clear appeal to all citizens on Monday. They emphasized that voluntary surrender is the safest way to remove dangerous items from homes and surroundings, and reminded everyone of a key rule.
We appeal to all individuals who possess or find weapons, ammunition, explosives, or other lethal items not to touch them, move them, or bring them to police stations themselves. Simply call 192, and qualified officers will arrive at a pre-arranged location to safely take custody of the dangerous items.
The police highlight that citizens can voluntarily surrender both illegal and legal weapons, ammunition, and explosive devices without any sanctions as part of the national campaign "Less Weapons, Less Tragedies." Surrender can be done anonymously, without initiating misdemeanor or criminal proceedings for illegal possession of these items.
The Međimurje Police Department once again thanked the citizen for their responsible behavior and awareness of the potential danger such discoveries pose.
