The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) activated a red weather alert on Sunday, August 2, 2026, for a large part of Croatia. The highest warning level due to extremely high temperatures is in effect for the Zagreb, Knin, Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions, as reported by N1 Croatia.
The ongoing heatwave brings very hot weather to most areas. According to the DHMZ forecast, as carried by the Zadar List, maximum daily air temperatures will range between 34 and 39 degrees Celsius.
Regional portal Slavonija notes that DHMZ has specifically extended the red warning for the Rijeka region. On Sunday, this area is expected to see maximum daily temperatures of up to 36°C, with nighttime temperatures not dropping below 26°C.
The red alert indicates extremely dangerous weather conditions that could threaten human health. The elderly, children, chronic patients, and those working outdoors are particularly at risk. Citizens are advised not to spend extended periods in the sun, avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest part of the day, drink fluids regularly, and cool their living spaces.
In addition to the red alert, DHMZ has issued an orange warning for the Osijek and Karlovac regions, while a yellow warning is in effect for the Gospić region, according to N1 Croatia.
According to information from N1 Croatia and the Zadar List, in the interior of Dalmatia, daytime cloud development is possible, with a slight chance of a local afternoon shower. Winds will be mostly light, occasionally moderate from the northeast, while the east of the country will see a southeast wind. On the Adriatic, a weak to moderate bora wind will shift to a southwest wind by midday.
