Los Angeles Lakers fans are eagerly awaiting the new NBA season, and Luka Dončić has sent them a clear message, he's ready and motivated. After his season was cut short in April 2026 by a torn knee tendon, the 27-year-old Slovenian international addressed the franchise's fans via email, confirming that his rehabilitation went perfectly.
"I took a proper break from basketball during the first few weeks after the season ended to allow my body to recover. My recovery went very well, and I'm now at 100% of my physical capacity," Dončić said, as reported by Net.hr.
Before the injury sidelined him, the 2.03-meter-tall playmaker was putting up impressive numbers. He averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game, stats worthy of the tightest circle of candidates for the league's Most Valuable Player award. The 2024 NBA finalist with the Dallas Mavericks is now the absolute leader of the Los Angeles squad.
Dončić also explained his unconventional approach to the summer break. "Taking time away from basketball is something I do at the start of every offseason. It's a different approach to things, but it works for me. When I allow myself to feel a bit of a craving for the game and try new things, it only strengthens my desire and motivation to get back on the court," he said.
He shared a similar thought with Kurir.rs: "After the season ended, I rested for a few weeks from basketball to recover my body. Now I'm completely healthy. I like to step away from basketball briefly every summer, enjoy other things, and recharge my batteries. When I miss basketball, I come back even hungrier and more motivated."
With LeBron James departing to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers have almost completely revamped their roster. Alongside Dončić, the new core consists of Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton, Kevon Looney, Ziaire Williams, and Matisse Thybulle. Dončić will host the entire group in his home country, where the Lakers will hold a four-day mini-camp this August. In addition to gym work, numerous off-court activities are planned.
With this latest statement, his motivation and determination to turn the Lakers into title contenders are no longer in question.
