Croatian tennis players Donna Vekić and Antonia Ružić saw their campaigns at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto come to an end in the second round. Vekić, ranked 35th in the world, suffered an unexpected loss to Switzerland's Viktorija Golubić, while Ružić (56th on the WTA list) was powerless against the much higher-ranked American Madison Keys.
Donna Vekić played her first match at the Toronto Masters on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. After receiving a bye in the first round, she faced Viktorija Golubić, the world No. 51, in the second. The first set was a tense battle, with Vekić managing to win 7-5, despite dropping her serve to love at 4-4. The Croatian then reeled off three consecutive games to secure the lead.
However, the rest of the match saw a complete turnaround. The second set lasted just 35 minutes, with Golubić quickly building a 4-1 advantage. Vekić failed to find her rhythm and lost the set convincingly 2-6. In the decisive third set, the Swiss player capitalized on a break point at 2-2 to move ahead 5-2. Although Vekić managed to close the gap to 5-3, she immediately dropped her serve and conceded the set 3-6.
The match statistics reveal issues in the Croatian's game. Vekić hit five aces but only managed a 50 percent first-serve percentage. She converted four of ten break points but was broken seven times. This marks her third consecutive defeat, following early exits at the WTA tournament in Berlin and Wimbledon. Golubić will face Poland's Iga Świątek in the round of 16.
Antonia Ružić, who had defeated France's Lois Boisson in three sets the previous day, August 3, 2026, had no answer to Madison Keys' game in the second round. The American, ranked 23rd in the world and the 2025 Australian Open champion, won 6:1, 6:2 after one hour and 22 minutes of play.
Ružić lost her serve five times during the match and managed just one break. This brought an early end to both Croatian representatives' participation in Toronto.
