Two individuals voluntarily surrendered explosive devices, weapons, and ammunition to the police on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as part of the 'Less Weapons, Fewer Tragedies' campaign, the police announced a day later. This is another example of the successful implementation of this long-running preventive campaign.
What Was Surrendered
The first individual surrendered six pieces of TNT ammunition, each weighing 200 grams, 250 grams of black gunpowder, and 29 detonator caps. Specially trained officers from the Zagreb Rapid Response Unit took over and safely removed the dangerous items.
The second individual voluntarily handed over an 8mm caliber gas pistol to the police.
Surrender Without Penalties
The police remind citizens that the 'Less Weapons, Fewer Tragedies' campaign is still ongoing and that weapons can be voluntarily surrendered without initiating criminal or misdemeanor proceedings. This applies when the weapon is reported to the competent authority for surrender before all legal police powers begin to be applied, in accordance with the Law on the Acquisition and Possession of Weapons by Citizens.
Do Not Bring Weapons Yourself
Citizens are particularly warned not to bring weapons, ammunition, or mine-explosive devices to police stations themselves, as this could endanger their own health and the safety of others. Instead, they should call 192 or contact the nearest police station to report their intention to surrender.
Afterwards, trained and qualified police officers will arrive at the scene to take over and safely dispose of the dangerous items.
Unlimited Surrender Opportunity
Voluntary surrender of weapons is not time-limited, and citizens can obtain additional information via the toll-free line 0800 88 92. The police once again appeal to all those who possess weapons, ammunition, or mine-explosive devices in their homes, garages, basements, or other spaces not to keep them but to voluntarily surrender them and thereby prevent potential accidents.
