A rare and striking meteorological sight was recorded over the Rijeka bay area on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, 2026. A RIportal reader captured a waterspout forming over the sea surface off Kantrida, as dark storm clouds gathered over Kvarner, signaling unstable weather conditions.
The photographs published by RIportal clearly show a characteristic funnel-shaped column descending from the storm cloud toward the sea surface, accompanied by a pronounced rain curtain. This spectacle drew the attention of many who noticed the rapid change in weather and the formation of an unstable atmosphere in the Kvarner region.
The waterspout formed over the open sea and slowly moved toward the coast, while waves grew and the sea became increasingly rough. Although it was a brief event, it was visually striking and unusual for the area.
Waterspouts typically form during unstable weather when strong thunderstorm clouds develop. Although most such phenomena last only a few minutes and cause no damage, they can be dangerous at sea for smaller boats and other vessels caught in their vicinity.
