Bosnian-Herzegovinian striker Edin Džeko will continue to lead Schalke's attack. The Gelsenkirchen club officially confirmed on Monday, August 4, 2026, that the 40-year-old veteran has signed a new one-year contract, putting an end to all speculation about his future.
Džeko joined the club in January 2026 from Fiorentina and immediately became an indispensable cog in the team. In just 11 matches in the spring part of the season, he scored six goals and provided six assists, directly contributing to winning the 2. Bundesliga title in the 2025/2026 season and Schalke's return to the top tier of German football after three seasons in the second division.
The club's sporting director, Youri Mulder, did not hide his enthusiasm for signing the experienced striker. "Edin brought something special to Schalke 04 during his first four and a half months at the club. He was a key player and a fan favorite, and his personality meant he was always an example both on and off the pitch. Therefore, we believe he can help us in the Bundesliga as well," Mulder said.
Džeko himself was equally pleased. "Ever since I arrived at Schalke in the winter, I've been part of a fantastic team and experienced incredible support from the fans. Promotion to the Bundesliga is one of the highlights of my career. It was incredible. Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I'm still hungry and want to help our team in the Bundesliga too," Džeko stated. The striker will continue to wear the number 10 jersey.
This will be Džeko's fifth season in the Bundesliga. Fans remember his brilliant days in the Wolfsburg jersey, for which he scored 66 goals in four seasons from 2007 to 2011. With the "Wolves," he won the championship title in 2009, when he was also named the league's best player. Džeko will rejoin the team for training on Tuesday, August 6, after a break following his appearances for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
