Three members of Ukraine's Special Operations Forces were injured in yesterday's ammunition detonation at a military training ground in the Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine, while five others are still missing, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported. The incident began on July 31, 2026, at approximately 11:55 local time, with ammunition continuing to detonate until 7 PM.
"Search teams are currently combing the site," the Special Operations Forces said via social media, as reported by Index.hr. The cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding it are currently unknown. A criminal case has been opened by Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation regarding potential violations of regulations on the handling of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and other hazardous materials.
Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Simchyshyn stated that there is no confirmed information about casualties, but several residential and public buildings were damaged in the explosion. Due to safety measures, some public transport routes have been temporarily altered. Police have informed residents about the area where debris from the exploded ammunition may fall and have set up a cordon around the incident site.
The explosion occurred less than thirty days after a previous major ammunition detonation. A Russian attack on July 6, 2026, struck a warehouse in Vyshneve, a city on the western outskirts of Kyiv, triggering a series of secondary explosions that killed seven people and injured 29 others.
Meanwhile, alarming reports about air quality are coming from Kyiv. "Kyiv residents say it's hard to breathe in the city. The city looks like something straight out of a zombie apocalypse," reads a post on the Telegram channel Military Summary. No further details about the cause of this situation were provided.
According to a report from the Telegram channel Operatyvny ZSU, two hits were recorded on the territory of the municipal organization "Kyivmedspetstrans." It was not specified whether these were the result of Russian attacks or related incidents.
