Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has finally spoken out about the strict secrecy surrounding Sadie Sink's character in the new Spider-Man film, which has already grossed $930 million in its opening weekend.

After the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally unveiled the mysterious role of actress Sadie Sink, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige explained why the company went to such lengths to keep that identity under wraps. Sink, in fact, plays Jean Grey, the telepath from the X-Men who takes on the role of the villain in the new film alongside Tom Holland.
Although fans, YouTube theorists, and nearly the entire internet had been speculating about this very role for months beforehand, Marvel Studios kept its cards close to its chest. The actress was cast back in March 2025, and even then, reports suggested she might embody Jean Grey. Despite all the online buzz, Marvel remained tight-lipped, and Sink was notably quiet in promotional materials. In the days leading up to the premiere, the studio even began teasing the public on the subject.
After director Destin Daniel Cretton hinted that Marvel had a "very real reason" for keeping Sink's character identity under wraps, Feige finally broke his silence in an interview with Variety. "It's purely about creating the best possible experience for the audience during the opening weekend," he stated.
According to Feige, everything was geared toward the surprise. Marvel has kept major cameos and reveals under wraps before, with perhaps the most famous example being Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, when it comes to Sink as Jean Grey, the chief architect of the MCU emphasizes that this isn't just about a single film.
"Sadie's character is one that our fans know holds immense importance within the Marvel universe, and she plays a pivotal role in the future of the MCU," Feige explained, adding: "I'm just glad the secret is finally out and that Sadie no longer has to dodge that question."
In the film, this version of the telepath takes control of the minds of random New Yorkers, as well as MJ (Zendaya), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Punisher (Jon Bernthal), bringing the city to a standstill and dismantling the Department of Damage Control.
Sink hasn't yet had a chance to publicly comment on her big reveal, likely because Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already making headlines for other reasons. Following its premiere on July 31, 2026, the film defied expectations and shattered box office records. In just its opening weekend, the film grossed an incredible $930 million worldwide, and with only four days of release under its belt, the billion-dollar mark seems within reach.
