Spanish international footballer Ferran Torres found himself at the center of an unexpected political storm after wearing a cap with the slogan 'Make Spain Great Again' (MSGA) during the celebration of winning the 2026 World Cup. In an interview with CNN on August 4, 2026, the 26-year-old player made it clear that his fashion accessory had nothing to do with politics.
"It was just for fun with friends and family, it had nothing to do with politics," Torres told CNN. "Honestly, I don't know anything about politics. All I wanted was to see Spain back on top, winning the Cup."
The Trump administration, however, interpreted the striker's move as tacit support for the MAGA ideology. The official White House account even posted: "Everyone wants to join this movement," turning Torres's celebration into a political message.
Torres scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina in the 106th minute of the match played at the stadium in New York/New Jersey. Just a day later, while rumors circulated that his real estate company was allegedly buying 20 homes in Valencia for speculation, he paraded the controversial cap at the celebration in Madrid. The player's entourage dismissed these claims as false.
CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins directly asked Torres about his future and the rumors linking him to Paris Saint-Germain, coached by Luis Enrique. "Right now, all I know is that on August 12, I have to go back there and train with them," the player said with a smile. "We'll see what happens... in football, everything can change in an instant, and I'm ready for anything."
Meanwhile, Ajax announced on August 4, 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Barcelona for a one-year loan of Marc-André ter Stegen. "We have to bring the club back to where it belongs. I can't wait to make that happen," said the 34-year-old German international, confirming the transfer that Fabrizio Romano had previously reported.
Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach, for whom he made 127 appearances. He has played 423 matches for the Catalan club and won numerous trophies, including the Champions League and seven Spanish league titles. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Girona.
