On Thursday, August 6, 2026, Google announced a significant expansion of its AI assistant's capabilities within Google Maps. The feature, called "Ask Maps," launched back in March, now gains agentic abilities that allow it to independently perform multi-step tasks, including ordering food, booking hotels, and purchasing event tickets.

How Food Ordering Works

Google Maps head Miriam Daniel explained in a blog post how the new functionality works in practice. A user can simply say something like: "order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home." Ask Maps will then find open restaurants along the route that serve the requested dish.

"It will find open restaurants along your route that serve what you're craving, and it can even take into account your saved places or specific dietary needs," Daniel said. After selecting a restaurant, Ask Maps automatically adds the desired dish directly to the cart so the user can easily review and complete the order.

The food ordering feature has been available in the United States since Thursday and currently relies on partnerships with payment processing platforms Square and Toast. Integration with Uber Eats is planned for the near future.

Hotels, Events, and Personalization

The Ask Maps agent can now also search for information about hotels and events during trips. It compares prices in real time, checks accommodation availability, and offers ideas for nearby attractions. For event bookings, users can request a list of nearby concerts or comedy shows, and the assistant will provide links to purchase tickets.

Google has also expanded the Personal Intelligence option, which allows connecting Ask Maps with Gmail and Google Calendar. This feature is off by default and requires explicit user consent. Once activated, Maps can use email data for personalized information, such as where to grab a bite before a flight or how to get to the airport on time. Ask Maps can also remember previous conversations, allowing users to return and pick up where they left off.

Global Expansion and New Countries

In addition to the U.S., Ask Maps is expanding starting Thursday to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, with availability in English in more than 150 countries and territories worldwide. The public transit widget with real-time delay information, personalized responses, and conversation memory are available wherever Ask Maps is active.

For now, food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions are limited to the U.S., with Google announcing that the list of countries will expand over time. Ask Maps is available on the web and in the Google Maps app for iOS.
