The Municipal State Attorney's Office in Split requested and obtained a detention order for a 35-year-old man suspected of attacking the Mayor of Vis, Hrvoje Mratinić. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, by DORH, stating that an investigation is underway against the suspect for attempted grievous bodily harm, damage to another's property, and two counts of threats.
According to the State Attorney's Office, the sequence of events began in late July 2026, when the suspect issued threats to Mayor Mratinić via a social media post. Shortly thereafter, last week, a physical attack occurred in a public place in the center of Vis.
The prosecution suspects that the 35-year-old attacked the mayor with the intent to seriously injure him, striking him multiple times in the head and body and causing physical injuries. During the attack, he is also believed to have damaged the mayor's bicycle and issued another threat to him.
According to Slobodna Dalmacija, the conflict escalated after Mayor Mratinić personally came to remove part of a hospitality terrace, specifically the benches and cushions that a café had kept in front of the establishment for years. At that point, the brother of the café owner knocked him out.
Disagreements between the city government and the owner of the disputed hospitality establishment have persisted since the beginning of Mratinić's term. The city has repeatedly banned concerts organized by this café, which preceded the culmination of the conflict on the street.
After the examination, the Municipal State Attorney's Office in Split proposed to the investigating judge of the County Court in Split that detention be ordered. The reason for the proposal is the risk that he could influence witnesses and the likelihood that he would reoffend. The investigating judge accepted the prosecution's arguments and ordered detention for the 35-year-old suspect.
