Thick black smoke that hung over Zagreb's Borovje neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon alarmed many residents. Around 2 p.m., a ground-floor building located along the embankment at 107 Avenija Marina Držića caught fire, and the smoke could be seen from the Youth Bridge and surrounding neighborhoods.
Zagreb Fire Chief Siniša Jembrih confirmed the details of the operation. "This is a fire in a ground-floor building covering an area of 14 by 10 meters. The roof was also affected," Jembrih stated. He added that the fire has been contained, but firefighters are still on the scene damping down hot spots.
During the operation, firefighters managed to rescue one person. So far, there are no reports of injuries, and the cause of the fire will be determined after an investigation once the extinguishing is complete.
Although most sources indicate the fire occurred in the Borovje neighborhood, some media outlets, such as Zagreb.info, report that it took place in the Trnjanska Savica area. It has not yet been confirmed which neighborhood is exactly involved.
At nearly the same time, around 2 p.m., firefighters were also busy in Zadar County. County Fire Chief Matej Rudić confirmed a wildfire in Privlaka, as well as a new fire in an inaccessible forest area in Bokanjac. Additional forces were dispatched to that location to bring the blaze under control.
