State Inspectorate warns of excessive sulfur dioxide in a product not listed on the label, which can cause severe allergic reactions.
The State Inspectorate of the Republic of Croatia has issued an urgent consumer warning about the recall of Palm Sugar, 1 kg packages, under the Royal Orient brand. The reason for the recall is a confirmed irregularity that could endanger the health of sensitive groups.
The recall applies exclusively to the product with the code AE 685400 and a best-before date of October 1, 2026. The analysis found that the maximum permitted level of sulfur dioxide was exceeded, and it was not listed on the product's label.
Sulfur dioxide is used as a preservative in the food industry, but its amount is strictly regulated. While it poses no danger to most people within the prescribed limits, it can cause a range of unpleasant and potentially dangerous reactions in individuals sensitive to sulfites. These include difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, rashes, skin redness, and other manifestations of allergic reactions.
It is precisely because of this risk that the presence of sulfur dioxide in food must be clearly indicated on the packaging, which was not done in this case. The State Inspectorate explains that the product does not comply with Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 laying down the general principles and requirements of food law and Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Palm Sugar are advised not to consume it under any circumstances. Caution is especially advised for individuals with asthma or those who know they are sensitive to sulfites. The product can be returned to the place of purchase or handled according to the instructions provided by the retailer.
The recalled product originates from Thailand. The supplier is the Dutch company Asia Express Food B.V., while the company responsible for sales on the Croatian market is PAN ASIA d.o.o. from Zagreb, headquartered at Trg senjskih uskoka 7.
