Croatian rowers achieved excellent results on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the European Championships in Varese. The four-man crew consisting of Goran Mahmutović, Roko Bošković, Damir Martin, and Ivan Talaja secured a spot in the final, while Olympians Martin and Valent Sinković advanced to the semifinal of the double sculls. Unfortunately, brothers Patrik and Anton Lončarić, along with David Šain, failed to progress from their qualifying heats.
The Croatian four dominated their qualifying heat. According to Sportske novosti, they posted the fastest time of 5:42.83, leaving the German crew behind with 5:43.57 and the Czech crew with 5:43.80. As reported by Index.hr Sport, the final of the four is scheduled for August 1, 2026, starting at 12:47 PM.
The Sinković brothers successfully navigated both the qualifying heat and the semifinal. In the qualifying heat, as reported by Index.hr Sport, they finished second with a time of 6:15.90, behind the Belgian crew of Aaron Andries and Tibo Vyvey (6:15.18). The semifinal, held on Friday at 3:05 PM, saw them take third place with a time of 6:09.60, according to Sportske novosti. The Serbian crew (6:08.14) and the Spanish crew (6:09.15) were faster.
The final of the double sculls, where the Sinković brothers will face crews from the Czech Republic, Romania, and Italy, takes place on August 1, 2026, starting at 11:34 AM.
Other Croatian crews did not fare as well in their qualifying heats. Brothers Patrik and Anton Lončarić finished sixth in the double with a time of 6:39.08, while the Italians were fastest (6:21.13). David Šain also finished last in his single sculls qualifying heat with a time of 7:00.78.
The European Championships in Varese continue on August 1, 2026, when Croatian rowers will have the chance to compete for medals in two events.
