Croatian Exports Grow by Double Digits, Deficit Breaks 10 Billion Euros

Goods exports rose 10.8 percent in the first half of the year, but significantly faster growth in imports from non-EU countries deepened the foreign trade deficit.

Total goods exports from the Republic of Croatia in the first six months of 2026 reached 13.7 billion euros, marking a 10.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to preliminary data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (DZS) released on Friday, August 7.

At the same time, the value of imports rose to 23.9 billion euros, an annual increase of 4.8 percent. As a result, the foreign trade deficit for the first half of the year exceeded 10.2 billion euros, while import coverage by exports stood at 57.4 percent.

Exports to the EU Lead Growth

The main driver of export momentum was the European Union member states. The value of goods placed on that market reached 9.5 billion euros, a robust surge of 14.1 percent compared to the first half of 2025. On the other hand, exports to non-EU countries grew by 3.9 percent, reaching 4.2 billion euros.

Regarding imports, goods worth 18.3 billion euros were imported from EU members (up 3.8 percent). However, more significant pressure on the trade balance came from third countries: imports from non-EU countries rose by 8.4 percent, to 5.6 billion euros.

Trend Continues in the First Five Months

The DZS also released provisional data for the period from January to May, confirming a similar pattern. During that period, total exports amounted to 11.5 billion euros (up 11.5 percent year-on-year), while imports grew by 5.7 percent, to nearly 20 billion euros. The foreign trade deficit from January to May stood at 8.5 billion euros, with import coverage by exports holding steady at 57.4 percent.
