August is traditionally the month when Croatian highways experience the heaviest traffic. Thousands of tourists from Croatia and Europe are heading to the Adriatic these days, making multi-hour waits in traffic jams almost a given. Particularly critical are the A1 and A6 highway sections, as well as the approaches to Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, and border crossings.
If you have flexibility in choosing your departure date, Davor Kindy, in an article for Automanija, highlights several optimal time slots. The quietest days of the week are clearly Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Traffic on these days is significantly lighter than on weekends, so you can often reach your destination up to two hours earlier.
Another good option is early Monday morning. At that time, a large number of tourists have already reached their destination or are heading back home, so the roads are considerably freer than the previous weekend.
When it comes to the exact departure hour, the recommendation is to set off between 4 and 6 in the morning. This way, you'll cover most of your journey before traffic starts to surge and before the peak summer heat sets in. The engine and air conditioning work with less strain, which also positively affects fuel consumption.
If you can, avoid departing on Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Friday afternoons, and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., when mass weekend returns begin. Also, avoid the tourist turnover periods at the beginning and middle of August, when congestion is especially pronounced.
Many drivers opt to leave between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. During the night, temperatures are lower, there are fewer vehicles on the road, and fuel consumption is reduced. However, night driving is only advisable if you are well-rested. According to Kindy, fatigue is one of the main factors leading to serious traffic accidents during the summer months.
Even the best plan can't prevent a traffic accident or sudden roadworks. Therefore, before you set off, be sure to check the current road conditions and possible delays, and if necessary, adjust your departure time or choose a different route. During the summer, the traffic situation can change very quickly.
If your annual leave starts on a Saturday, consider leaving the evening before or early Saturday morning before sunrise. If you have freedom in choosing your travel dates, it's best to pick a Tuesday or Wednesday. The difference is significant, instead of long waits in traffic, you'll arrive at the coast stress-free and ready to enjoy yourself.
