Summer heatwaves bring more than just discomfort. A throbbing headache is one of the most common complaints, and many people casually attribute it solely to dehydration. While fluid intake is often the solution, it's important to know that a headache can be the first warning sign of much more serious conditions. Recognizing the accompanying symptoms can be crucial for a timely response and preventing more severe consequences.
Why Heat Causes Head Pain
Several physiological mechanisms lie behind heat-induced headaches. The main culprit is dehydration. The body cools itself through sweating, but in the process, it loses water and electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Even a minimal loss of water, just one to two percent of body mass, can lead to a reduction in brain volume. This slight shrinking of brain tissue pulls on the membranes that surround it and stimulates pain receptors. At the same time, a lower blood volume results in reduced oxygen supply to the brain.
Another important factor is the widening of blood vessels, known as vasodilation. To cool down, the body widens blood vessels near the skin's surface. However, this widening also occurs in the blood vessels of the head and neck, which can put pressure on surrounding nerves and cause that characteristic throbbing pain, especially in people prone to migraines.
From Mild Discomfort to a Serious Warning
Not all heat-related headaches are the same. It's necessary to observe the whole body, not just the head pain. A standard dehydration headache is often dull or throbbing, with pain on both sides of the head or as pressure behind the eyes. It's accompanied by clear signs of fluid deficiency: increased thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and dark yellow urine. A simple approach involves moving to a cooler environment, resting, and gradually replenishing fluids. Improvement in symptoms is expected within sixty minutes.
If the headache worsens despite cooling down, and other symptoms appear, it's likely heat exhaustion. This is a situation where the body overheats and loses its ability to cool effectively. The main indicators are heavy sweating, while the skin may be pale, cold, and clammy. Nausea, sometimes vomiting, severe weakness, dizziness, and painful muscle cramps occur. The pulse becomes rapid but weak. Body temperature may be higher than normal but rarely exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. Heat exhaustion is a serious warning sign that demands immediate action.
When Life Is in Danger
Heatstroke is a medical emergency that can lead to permanent organ damage and death. It occurs when body temperature suddenly spikes above 40°C, and the cooling systems completely stop working. The headache is intense and throbbing, but the key difference is severe neurological symptoms. The clearest and most dangerous sign is the cessation of sweating despite extreme heat; the skin becomes red, hot, and dry. The pulse is very strong and rapid. The person shows confusion, disorientation, speech may be slurred, and seizures or loss of consciousness are possible. If heatstroke is suspected, call emergency services immediately.
How to React and When to Seek Help
For a milder headache, the first step is to get out of the heat into a cooled or at least shaded space. Remove excess clothing, lie down with legs slightly elevated, and apply cold compresses to the forehead, neck, and wrists. Fluids should be taken in small sips. As a first measure, pain relievers should be avoided because some can further strain the kidneys, which are already under stress from dehydration.
Medical help should be sought if the headache does not subside after an hour of cooling. Signs that require urgent medical attention are sudden and very severe pain, vomiting that prevents fluid intake, confusion, a temperature above 39°C, a stiff neck, or neurological issues like vision or speech disturbances.
