Hajduk's footballers are visiting Lithuanian side Žalgiris in Vilnius for the first leg of the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round, and the first half was all about the in-form Michele Šego. The Split side heads into the break with a narrow 2-1 lead, thanks to the double scorer who has confirmed his excellent form in European appearances.
Šego put Hajduk ahead as early as the 5th minute, confidently converting from the penalty spot. Just nine minutes later, he had another chance from twelve yards, but this time his effort was saved by home goalkeeper Šarkauskas.
However, Šego was not to be denied. In the 44th minute, when it seemed the teams would go into the break level, he won a free kick some 25 meters from goal. He opted for a direct strike and unleashed a true rocket that nestled into the top corner, leaving the Žalgiris keeper with no chance. It was a goal that restored Hajduk's lead at 2-1 and capped off a brilliant individual display in the first 45 minutes.
In the moments between Šego's goals, Hajduk's defense was not up to par. Poor reactions in the visitors' backline allowed Nikola Petković to score in the 34th minute and make it 1-1. That goal briefly brought uncertainty back into the tie, before Šego took matters into his own hands once again.
The match in Vilnius continues in the second half, with Hajduk, led by the inspired Šego, looking to secure an even better result ahead of the return leg in Split.
