Chaos in Konavle Leaves Tons of Trash

Over the past weekend, the Konavle region faced massive traffic congestion that caused chaos but also revealed the humane side of the local population. Vehicle queues stretched from the Karasovići and Konfin border crossings all the way to Čilipi, with weary travelers waiting between ten and twelve hours to cross the border.
While drivers and families 'baked' on the asphalt for hours, the people of Konavle showed remarkable solidarity. Young people from Pridvorje and Vitaljina organized spontaneously, handing out water and food. Numerous residents opened their homes and yards to provide travelers, especially those with children, with much-needed respite and refreshment.
"I especially want to thank the young people from Pridvorje who were out late last night handing out sandwiches to people in the queues, as well as the young people from Vitaljina who spontaneously distributed water. These are examples that make it worth being a mayor," said Božo Lasić, Mayor of the Konavle Municipality, for Soundset Ragusa.
Mayor Lasić also had nothing but praise for the services on the ground. He noted that the Civil Protection Headquarters performed flawlessly upon activation, and the Public Fire Brigade carried out all necessary tasks. During yesterday, Lasić also spoke with Minister Božinović and the County Prefect, who, as he stated, are aware of the seriousness of the situation and offered their support by making their people available.
"Traffic might be somewhat heavier next weekend as well, but I don't believe it will be like this. Yesterday I received dozens of calls from my fellow citizens and the media. I answered everyone as much as I could. If I neglected anyone, I apologize," the mayor added.
After the congestion subsided, an ugly picture remained on the ground. Huge amounts of waste piled up along the main road, left behind by the enormous number of people and vehicles. The situation was calmer this morning, August 3, 2026, and the Municipality is now turning to cleanup.
"There are huge amounts of trash along the main road, and we still need to address that in the coming days because we have a limited number of people. The trash cleanup will take days, and we will start from Vitaljina first, then we will clean up the main road," Lasić announced.
The mayor concluded that there was some good in every bad situation, expressing pride in the response of his fellow citizens and the institutions that stood by travelers in need.
