At the Karasovići border crossing with Montenegro, travelers on Sunday are waiting between one and one and a half hours, but traffic is moving without major delays. Although congestion is still present, the situation is incomparable to last week's traffic collapse that paralyzed access roads and severely disrupted daily life for local residents in Konavle.
HTV reporter Sandra Lacković reported from the scene that the current situation matches a typical weekend at the peak of the tourist season. "There are crowds and cars, but this is a usual tourist weekend in the high season. Cars are crossing the border very quickly, so for now everything is going without major difficulties," Lacković told HRT.
She emphasized that the difference compared to last weekend is enormous. "It's incomparable to last weekend when queues were 20 kilometers long and people waited up to 16 hours in line," she added. Last week's congestion caused major problems on the roads and added extra strain on Konavle residents who use the same routes daily.
The lighter traffic is partly due to some travelers changing their routes. Most of those passing through Karasovići are EU citizens heading to Montenegro, Albania, or Kosovo. According to estimates from the field, many chose alternative routes this weekend.
"Apparently, they decided this time to change their route, so they're not going through Croatia but via Bosnia and Herzegovina or Serbia," Lacković said. Although the approach to the crossing is less congested, the situation could change quickly with the arrival of a few heavier waves of vehicles.
Police are also present in the area around the crossing, regulating traffic as needed. "Today, police are here and they're managing traffic when necessary," the journalist confirmed. Current congestion does not require major interventions, but officers are monitoring the influx of vehicles. Travelers are advised to check road conditions before setting out and, if possible, consider traveling outside the busiest times.
