An Index.hr reader captured footage on Monday, August 4, 2026, of two individuals burning the Serbian flag on an overpass near Otočac. The incident occurred ahead of the commemoration of the anniversary of the military-police operation Storm, and the footage was published on Tuesday in Croatian and Serbian media.
The video shows two people dressed in black, with their heads covered, who climbed onto the railing of the overpass. They placed the Serbian flag on it and then set it on fire.
Next to the burning flag, a banner was also placed that read: "Thank them for everything, we are free people, Storm '95."
Index.hr reports that it has sent an inquiry to the Croatian police regarding the case and will publish their response once received. As of the time of this article's publication, the police had not commented on the incident. The event was also reported by Serbia's Kurir.rs, which described the incident as "scandalous."
The military-police operation Storm, which liberated occupied Croatian territory in 1995, is commemorated on August 5. The Hague Tribunal definitively acquitted Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač, and in Croatia, narratives that describe Storm as a crime are rejected.
