Workers from "Makarski komunalac" conducted another morning operation on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, removing towels, sunbeds, and other items from city beaches that visitors had used to reserve spots in advance. The video of the operation, posted on the service's TikTok profile, quickly drew significant attention and divided public opinion.
Alongside the video, "Makarski komunalac" stated that they regularly patrol the beaches under the jurisdiction of the City of Makarska together with city wardens. "Unfortunately, some visitors still do not follow the rules of conduct, so we remind you again: reserving spots with towels is not allowed," their post read.
They also warned sunbed renters that, while not rented out, sunbeds must be stacked in one place. All empty but already laid-out sunbeds were returned by communal workers to the designated storage area. "Our goal is to ensure equal access to city beaches for everyone," they emphasized, thanking all who follow the rules.
The post sparked a heated debate. Many citizens and tourists praised the decisive move by the communal services, pointing out that no one has the right to privatize public goods or block access to the sea by leaving items behind.
On the other hand, some commenters highlighted the need for greater consistency. They believe that the same rules should be strictly applied to private concessionaires whose empty sunbeds often occupy the most attractive shaded parts of the beach throughout the day.
From "Makarski komunalac" they clarified that their jurisdiction is exclusively the area of the City of Makarska, while other municipalities on the Makarska Riviera have their own communal services.
