  • The 34-year-old lost his place at Barcelona after a serious knee injury and the arrival of Joan Garcia.
  • Ter Stegen made 423 appearances for Barcelona and won the Champions League and seven Spanish league titles.
  • Due to injury and losing his club spot, he was not called up to the German national team for the 2026 World Cup.

German international goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will continue his career at Dutch club Ajax. Both clubs officially confirmed on Tuesday the agreement for a one-year loan of the 34-year-old, ending a period of uncertainty about his future.

Barcelona wished their long-time shot-stopper "good luck in this new phase of his career" in a statement. Ter Stegen remains under contract with the Catalan club until 2028, but he opted for a loan move to regain regular playing time.

Ajax Gets a 'World-Class' Goalkeeper

Ajax's sporting director, Jordi Cruyff, did not hide his excitement over the arrival of the experienced goalkeeper. He described him as a "world-class" keeper and expressed confidence that he will immediately strengthen the Amsterdam side. The loan runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, and the announcement did not specify whether there is an option to make the move permanent.

Rich Career at Barcelona

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach and made 423 appearances over more than a decade. He won the Champions League with the club in 2015 and claimed seven Spanish league titles. His dominance between the posts was only interrupted by a serious injury.

In September 2024, he suffered a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee, sidelining him for nearly eight months. He spent last season away from La Liga action, and from January to June he was on loan at Girona, where he also rarely played due to a hamstring injury.

New Keepers at Camp Nou

In the meantime, Barcelona has turned to new solutions. Joan Garcia, who arrived from Espanyol in the summer of 2025, has taken over as the first-choice goalkeeper, while Polish keeper Wojciech Szczęsny serves as his backup. The injury and changes at the club have also significantly impacted Ter Stegen's international status.

Although he became Germany's first-choice goalkeeper after Euro 2024, he has since lost that status. He was not included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup, for which long-time keeper Manuel Neuer returned to the lineup.
