Križevci Invest in Preschoolers: New Kindergarten Brings 80 Places, 60 More Planned

Work is underway to convert the former polyclinic into a local kindergarten, and the City continues its family support measures.

In the former military barracks complex in Križevci, work is in full swing to transform the existing building of the former polyclinic into a modern space for the youngest. This is the new local kindergarten, which, according to announcements, will provide 80 additional places for preschool children.

Site Visit and Work Phases

The works were visited on Monday, August 4, 2026, by the Mayor of Križevci, Tomislav Katanović, the Head of the Administrative Department for Utilities, Construction, Spatial Planning, and Environmental Protection, Davor Zemljak, and representatives of the contractor, Elektrotehnika d.o.o. Currently, rough construction and craft works are underway. After that, electrical installations, replacement of exterior windows and doors, installation of underfloor heating, final interior works, and landscaping will follow.

Financial Structure of the Project

The total value of the reconstruction and repurposing of the building is €1.058 million including VAT. The project has also received a significant financial injection from the state budget, with the Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth providing €480,000 in grants. In addition, the City of Križevci will allocate an additional €103,000 for equipping the kindergarten itself. The plan is for all works to be completed and the necessary permits obtained by the end of 2026.

Expanding Capacity and Family Support

This is not the only infrastructure project in preschool education being prepared in Križevci. The City is simultaneously planning the construction of a new local kindergarten in the suburban settlement of Karane, which will provide an additional 60 places for children. Until the new facilities are completed, the City continues to provide direct support to families. Currently, a measure is active whereby grandparents who care for grandchildren of preschool age receive €250 per month. This form of assistance is currently used by 54 families.
