On the night of August 5-6, 2026, two fires struck the Kvarner region, causing material damage and one injury. Police investigations, conducted in cooperation with a fire inspector, revealed that the causes were technical in nature, and in one case, human action leading to ignition.
The first fire broke out on August 5 at around 9:30 PM in the wider Matulj area. Firefighters from the Opatija Public Fire Brigade (JVP) responded immediately and managed to extinguish the blaze. The investigation determined that the cause was a fault in the electrical wiring in the roof area. The fire consumed the upper part of an auxiliary building, and according to initial estimates, the material damage amounts to tens of thousands of euros.
Just a few hours later, on August 6 at around 4:20 AM, a drama unfolded in a family home on the island of Krk, in the town of Njivice. The fire, as the investigation showed, was most likely caused by a gas leak. A technical fault in the connection between the hose and the gas cylinder led to the accumulation of a gas mixture in the kitchen. A fatal spark occurred when the lights were turned on, triggering the ignition. A 50-year-old woman was injured in this incident. Firefighters from the Krk Public Fire Brigade intervened.
In light of these events, the police issued a strong appeal to citizens. They emphasize the importance of regularly inspecting and maintaining all electrical and gas installations and appliances. They also stress that all work and repairs should be entrusted exclusively to authorized and qualified professionals. "Regular maintenance of installations and appliances can reduce the risk of fire and protect human lives and property," the police said.
