Following yesterday's traffic chaos in Konavle, the Mayor of the Municipality of Konavle, Božo Lasić, took to his Facebook profile with an emotional message of gratitude to all those who helped calm the situation. He noted that by this morning, over eight cubic meters of garbage had already been collected, and the cleanup efforts are ongoing.
"The phones at Čistoća haven't stopped ringing; I ask everyone for patience as our capacities are stretched to the maximum. Over 8 cubic meters of garbage have already been collected, and the work continues!" Lasić wrote.
Lasić particularly highlighted the solidarity of the local population. At the height of the congestion, young people from the settlement of Vitaljina took the initiative to distribute water and guide people. According to him, Toni contacted him with the information that they had distributed two pallets of water. At the same time, the priest, Father Petar Markić, gathered young people who prepared sandwiches, and numerous residents opened their yards, offering shade and help to complete strangers.
"During the worst of the congestion, I received messages that the youth from Vitaljina were distributing water, guiding people, and calming the situation. In such moments, one pauses and realizes that kindness is quieter than anger, but it is stronger: it doesn't give speeches, but brings a bottle of water, makes a sandwich, shows the way, and tells a person they are not alone," the Mayor conveyed.
The Mayor also praised the police officers who, under extremely difficult circumstances, spent hours in the heat and under great pressure, directing traffic, calming people, and maintaining order. "It's easy to speak from the shade about what should have been done; it's much harder to stand on the scorching asphalt and take responsibility," Lasić emphasized.
He also thanked the Civil Protection Headquarters, the Public Fire Brigade of the Municipality of Konavle, the county fire chief Simbi, the county prefect who persistently worked on solving the problem via phone calls, and the media for their fair coverage of the situation.
Lasić particularly highlighted the workers of the utility company Čistoća. "These are not unknown people, but our neighbors and fellow residents who, month after month, honestly perform a difficult, responsible, and honorable job thanks to which we do not choke in our own garbage," he wrote. He also reminded of the importance of responsible behavior by all citizens when disposing of waste that ends up at the Grabovica landfill.
The cleanup of the area continues today. Čistoća workers have begun cleaning through Vitaljina, and there are plans to clean along the main road in cooperation with the patrol service. The Mayor concluded that yesterday, despite the chaos, people, solidarity, and responsibility prevailed. "These days, I have been convinced again that what holds us together are not those who shout the loudest, but those who work quietly," Lasić said.
