Liverpool Football Club is intensively working on bolstering its attacking options ahead of the new season, with the primary target being Paris Saint-Germain and France national team winger Bradley Barcola. According to the BBC, the Reds are prepared to offer around £100 million for the 23-year-old, but the Parisian club is demanding significantly more for their player, a whopping £145 million.
Barcola joined PSG in 2023 from Lyon for £38.5 million and has quickly become one of Europe's most highly regarded young attackers in just a few seasons. With the Parisian club, he has won the last two Champions League titles, three Ligue 1 crowns, two Coupe de France trophies, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. He has earned 28 caps for the French national team and scored three goals at this year's World Cup, including one in the 4-6 defeat to England in the third-place match.
Liverpool has recently accustomed its fans to major financial moves. The Anfield club has already paid over £100 million for a single player on two occasions. Last June, they signed midfielder Florian Wirtz for €100 million plus bonuses, which could total £116 million for Bayer Leverkusen. Just a few months later, in September, they shelled out a record £125 million to bring Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
Last season was disappointing for the Reds, who finished fifth in the Premier League, a staggering 25 points behind champions Arsenal. According to Sky Sports, new manager Andoni Iraola sees the wing positions as key to his philosophy, making this area of the squad a priority in his first transfer window on Merseyside.
In addition to Barcola, Liverpool is also interested in his club teammate, 18-year-old Senegalese winger Ibrahim Mbaye. Sky Sports reports that the Reds have explored the terms of a potential deal for the teenage wide player, who primarily operates on the right flank. The interest in Mbaye is entirely independent of any potential Barcola signing, and there is a possibility that Liverpool could bring in both.
The club's plan is to have five wingers in the squad by the end of the transfer window, one of whom would be a younger player earmarked for development. Mbaye, who reportedly shows interest in a move to Anfield, fits perfectly into that strategy.
At the end of last season, Liverpool lost Mohamed Salah, who left the club as a free agent after nine highly successful years and 257 goals. A further blow to the attacking line came with the severe Achilles tendon injury suffered by French forward Hugo Ekitike in April. His return to the pitch is not expected before 2027.
The situation is further complicated by uncertainty surrounding Cody Gakpo, who has been linked with a potential move to Tottenham, although Liverpool insists they have no intention of selling him. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool has yet to submit a formal offer for either Barcola or Mbaye, and PSG's £145 million valuation of Barcola makes that deal extremely challenging.
