The Croatian men's junior handball team was defeated by Iceland 29:37 in the first round of the Main Round at the European Championship. Despite the convincing loss, hope for a place in the quarterfinals remains alive, with a crucial match awaiting them tomorrow.
Croatia opened the match furiously, taking a 3:0 lead, while Iceland scored their first goal only in the 5th minute. However, by the middle of the first half, they had lost their advantage. In the 16th minute, Iceland equalized at 6:6, and two minutes later took the lead (7:8), which they never relinquished.
After Croatia managed to level the score at 8:8, the opponents went on a "lethal" run of five consecutive goals. Iceland held a six-goal lead at halftime (11:17).
The Croatian juniors started the second half well, cutting the deficit to 14:19 after five minutes. But then a series of technical errors followed, which Iceland capitalized on to pull away to 15:22. After just over eight minutes of play in the second half, Croatia was left with two players fewer.
Iceland took advantage of this, scoring three goals from seven meters to lead 16:25. By the 42nd minute, it was already 16:26, sealing the outcome. In the closing stages, Croatia had a chance to reduce the gap to less than six goals, but numerous solo attempts and technical mistakes prevented that.
David Bajan was the player of the match with six goals, while Roberto Lucas Pitt added five. For Iceland, Nafri Brynjar Arndal shone with 11 goals without a miss. Andrej Vito Gorički stood out with a high level of play, preventing a complete collapse.
Iceland entered the Main Round with three wins and was considered one of the tournament favorites. Tomorrow at 7:30 PM, Croatia plays against Hungary in a match that will decide their advancement to the quarterfinals.
