Scientists using the world's most powerful solar telescope, the Inouye Solar Telescope, have captured the Sun's surface in unprecedented detail. The new images and videos reveal incredible features, including tiny vortices of superheated gas created by the intertwining of the Sun's magnetic field.
The research results were published on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in the prestigious journal Nature. The telescope, located on the island of Maui in Hawaii and owned by the U.S. National Science Foundation, has provided insight into processes that could be key to understanding space weather.
Vortices Like Van Gogh's Paintings
The footage clearly shows turbulent, feather-like structures moving in waves across the surface. Ruizhu Chen, a solar physicist at Stanford University who was not involved in the research, compared the scenes to a famous work of art. "It reminds me of famous paintings, like the swirling sky in Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'," Chen said.
Scientists also observed a phenomenon known as Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This occurs when layers of magnetized plasma move at different speeds, creating waves similar to those caused by wind on water. Although this phenomenon has been seen on Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn, Friedrich Wöger, co-author of the study from the National Solar Observatory, emphasized that "this has never been observed at this level on the Sun's surface."
Key to Predicting Space Storms
The Sun's surface, as scientists describe it, is actually an unstable "soup" of plasma heated to about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It is believed that these tiny vortices generate magnetic energy that can later be released in the form of powerful solar flares and coronal mass ejections.
"The Sun is the source of all this energy and space weather," said Dr. David Boboltz of the U.S. National Solar Observatory (NSO). More detailed images will help scientists better understand how energy is transferred through the Sun's atmosphere and why its outer layers are so hot.
The new discovery also has practical implications for life on Earth. Powerful solar eruptions can disrupt satellites, communication systems, and power grids, and pose a danger to astronauts. A better understanding of these processes is crucial for more accurate space weather forecasting and protecting critical infrastructure.
