Arm Yourself with Patience: Long Vehicle Queues at the Exit from BiH

Drivers traveling from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia these days can expect long queues and potential delays at several key border crossings. According to information from the BIHAMK Information Center, the biggest congestion has been recorded at the exits from BiH at the Izačić, Velika Kladuša, Hum, and Zupci crossings.
The situation at the Gradiška-Gornji Varoš border crossing is interesting. While there are no major delays at the exit ramp from Bosnia and Herzegovina, long waits are being recorded at the entrance to the Republic of Croatia. At all other crossings, travelers are currently delayed for up to 30 minutes at most.
In addition to border congestion, numerous roadworks across BiH are also hampering travel. Due to road surface rehabilitation, the A-1 motorway section Lašva-Kakanj, six kilometers long, is completely closed, with traffic redirected to the opposite carriageway. On the Golubinja-Nemila subsection, traffic is also suspended due to the continuation of construction on the Nemila-Vranduk subsection, with vehicles diverted to the M-17 main road.
On several main roads, restrictions for heavy vehicles are in effect. On the Dobro Polje-Miljevina, Tuzla-Bijeljina, and Jablanica-Blidinje routes, traffic is only allowed for vehicles up to 3.5 tons, while it remains suspended for all heavier vehicles. Alternating single-lane traffic is in place on the Crna Rijeka-Jajce road in Podmilačje and the Konjic-Jablanica road near Ribićki Most. Due to the installation of lighting in the Vratnik tunnel, traffic on the Sarajevo-Lapišnica main road is moving slowly every working day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Due to the introduction of the new passenger registration system at the entry and exit of European Union countries (EES), additional delays at border crossings are possible. As for specific regimes, the Brčko border crossing is open exclusively for passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tons. Since December 2, 2025, the Karakaj crossing has been reopened for all vehicle categories, while at the Šepak crossing, there is a ban on traffic for all freight vehicles.
BIHAMK appeals to all those planning longer trips to inform themselves in advance about the current road conditions and waiting times at border crossings. Due to high daytime temperatures, it is recommended to avoid driving long distances during the day, and if traveling, more frequent breaks are advised.
