Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez has expressed his satisfaction with life under new manager Enzo Maresca as the team adapts to his tactical demands. The 24-year-old Spaniard made a strong impression in the friendly against Inter Milan, suggesting he could have a far more prominent role in midfield ahead of the new Premier League season.
Gonzalez, who joined the club from FC Porto in February 2025, previously struggled for playing time under Pep Guardiola. Maresca's appointment now gives him a fresh opportunity to prove his abilities and earn a place in the Citizens' starting lineup.
Speaking to the club's official website, Gonzalez emphasized that the whole team is adapting to Maresca's training methodology. "We won't know everything we could learn during the year before the first week of the season. But even when a year passes, we will always continue learning," Gonzalez explained.
He also touched on the challenges of integrating players who join preparations later: "That's football and that's life. It's not easy because some players will arrive the same week as the Community Shield, but for those of us who have been here from day one, it will be easier to be ready for that match."
Speaking about his relationship with the new manager, Gonzalez shared his impressions. "I enjoy our training sessions with Enzo. Obviously, there are differences compared to last year with Pep, but there are many similarities in the way we play," he stated. "The whole idea of high pressing, winning the ball back as quickly as possible, and playing lots of passes is the same."
He added that it is crucial to maintain the ambition and level of play from previous seasons. "It's important that we keep the same level we've played at in recent years and with that ambition. I think these are Enzo's ideas, and I love it. The season is long, so we must be ready to adapt to the new things Enzo asks of us."
Gonzalez's impressive performance as a holding midfielder was evident in the second half against Inter. His presence brought crucial balance after midfielders Tijjani Reijnders and Mateo Kovacic struggled in the first half. His positioning as the "six" allowed Rico Lewis to push into midfield and initiate attacks.
Amid midfield competition and Rodri's uncertain future, Gonzalez's tactical understanding and adaptability to Maresca's high-pressing system represent a significant opportunity to establish himself as a primary option rather than a fringe player.
Manchester City will test the readiness of Maresca's new system in their first competitive match, the Community Shield against Arsenal, on August 16, 2026. Gonzalez has a strong chance of starting given his constant presence since day one of preseason.
