The memorial event "Storm over Kvarner" will once again turn the Krk Bridge into a unique stage of remembrance this year. The fan associations of Rijeka, "Plavo bijeli otok" from Krk and "Vavik vjerna Kirija," are organizing the event, which takes place tonight, August 4, 2026, starting at 9:00 PM.
This year's edition carries special weight as it marks the 10th anniversary of the event. Over the past decade, "Storm over Kvarner" has grown into one of the most recognizable memorial events in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, attracting several thousand visitors each year.
The central moment of the evening is the lighting of 222 torches. This number is not coincidental, it symbolically represents the 222 Croatian defenders from the Kvarner area who gave their lives in the Homeland War. Against the unique backdrop of the Krk Bridge, the sight of hundreds of flames creates one of the most striking memorial programs in Croatia.
Before the start of the main program, representatives of the Association of Homeland War Veterans' Associations of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County will lay flowers and light candles at the "Cross of Gratitude to Participants in the Homeland War," located near the Krk Bridge.
After the memorial event concludes, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the 111th Brigade of the Croatian National Guard/Croatian Army will be commemorated at the same location. The organizers then invite all participants and visitors to a social gathering with food and drink offerings at the Riva of Pope John Paul II in Pesja Cove in Omišalj.
The organizers ask all participants to behave appropriately and follow the instructions of the stewards. A special appeal is directed at visitors who will watch the event from vessels in the waters around the Krk Bridge, they are asked not to fire signal flares or use pyrotechnics to prevent the risk of fire.
