Director of Inland Navigation Admits No Current Solution for Extreme Low Waters
The Croatian government is reassuring the public that the electricity supply is secure despite record-low river water levels causing problems across Europe. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated on Tuesday from Bol on Brač that there is no cause for concern, while experts simultaneously warn of unprecedented challenges.
Commenting on the energy situation, Prime Minister Plenković was clear. "HEP issued a statement yesterday, and from that side, there is no doubt that there will be electricity," Plenković told HRT Vijesti. He also emphasized that, according to information obtained in a conversation with the relevant minister, the entire situation is under control.
Additional assurance, as he announced, will come from a direct conversation with the President of HEP's Management Board, who is also on Brač, from whom he expects the latest information on the state of the system.
The record-low water level of the Danube has nearly halted the operation of Hungary's only nuclear power plant, Paks, causing alarm across parts of Europe. The Prime Minister confirmed that such extreme conditions affect the safety protocols of that plant. Regarding the Krško nuclear power plant, Plenković claims that everything is currently under control and that its operation is not threatened.
On the other hand, Duška Kunštek, Director of the Inland Navigation Directorate, spoke openly about the scale of the crisis on N1 television's show "Novi dan." Explaining what happens during extreme water level events on the Danube, she admitted that there is currently no ready solution for this situation. "We currently have no answer for extremely low waters," she stated in a conversation with host Ivan Hrstić.
Her statement sheds new light on the challenges Croatia faces, as domestic rivers are also battling record-low water levels, and extreme weather conditions are increasingly testing the resilience of critical infrastructure.
