Summary
  • Croatia has introduced strict bans on outdoor fire lighting due to fire risk.
  • Fire lighting is treated as a criminal offense with fines up to 19,900 euros or 60 days in prison.
  • Barbecuing remains an exception and is still allowed, with a call for caution.

Due to the exceptionally high temperatures affecting the country and the increased risk of wildfires, strict bans on outdoor fire lighting have come into effect in Croatia. What was previously just a misdemeanor is now treated far more seriously, with hefty fines and even prison sentences for offenders.

Fines up to nearly 20,000 euros or two months in prison

Under the new decisions, citizens who fail to comply with the ban will be sanctioned under criminal law, rather than misdemeanor law. The maximum penalty is up to 19,900 euros or, alternatively, up to 60 days in prison. These measures aim to deter any risky behavior that could lead to catastrophic fires.

Barbecuing is still allowed

Despite the strict measures, authorities have made an exception for one of the favorite summer activities. Barbecuing remains permitted, but citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution when using grills and open flames. Details and specific conditions under which barbecuing is allowed were reported by Dnevnik.hr journalist Vanja Margetić.

Relevant authorities appeal to all citizens to behave responsibly and report any unauthorized fire lighting they observe to prevent potential tragedies.
