Summary
  • Old pink and paper driving licenses will soon expire and must be replaced.
  • New driving licenses are cards with over 200 security features, compliant with EU standards.
  • Replacement costs range from 20 euros (standard processing) to 59.73 euros (urgent processing), and applications can be submitted at police stations or via e-Citizens.

Croatian drivers who still carry old pink or paper driving licenses in their wallets should hurry to replace them. Although such documents have not been issued for years, some citizens still use them, and the deadline for their validity is slowly expiring.

More than 200 security features

The new driving licenses come in card form and will be uniform across the European Union. They feature more than 200 security elements, some visible without aids, while others can only be detected using advanced forensic tools. Compared to earlier paper versions, where the photo was glued on, in the new models the photo is embedded directly into the document. The document is machine-readable and contains an electronic data carrier.

How to apply and how much it costs

Applications for a new driving license can be submitted at a police administration or station, as well as through the e-Citizens system. Individuals with a valid digital ID card do not need to submit a new photo, and a medical certificate is not required, except for professional drivers who must still provide one.

The cost depends on the chosen processing speed:

  • Standard processing (up to 30 working days): 20 euros
  • Expedited processing (three working days): 26 euros
  • Urgent processing (one working day): 59.73 euros

Additionally, delivery of the finished license to your home address costs 24.02 euros.

Why old licenses are being replaced

The reason for introducing new documents is not just modernization, but also increasing road safety and aligning with European Union rules. The new document facilitates information verification and significantly reduces the risk of misuse and forgery. Drivers are advised to start the replacement process in time to possess a document compliant with new European standards.
