An 18-year-old and a 44-year-old were arrested within hours of each other with high alcohol concentrations. The misdemeanor court sentenced both to 15 days in prison, suspended for one year, and a one-month driving ban.
Two drivers in the Velika Gorica area were pulled off the road over the weekend after breathalyzer tests revealed extremely high blood alcohol concentrations. Both were immediately brought before the competent misdemeanor court, which, despite their different ages and circumstances of the stop, imposed nearly identical sanctions.
The first case was recorded on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at around 10:10 PM in Sisak Street in Velika Gorica. Police stopped a vehicle with Zagreb registration, and behind the wheel was an 18-year-old. The breathalyzer test measured a concentration of 2.13 grams of alcohol per kilogram, which is several times above the legal limit.
The police arrested the young driver and brought him to court, proposing a fine of 1,320 euros and a three-month driving ban for B-category vehicles. The court found the 18-year-old guilty but decided to impose a different sanction than the one requested by the police.
Just a few hours later, on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at around 1:55 AM, police stopped another driver on the A11 motorway near the Velika Gorica junction. This was a 44-year-old who was also driving a car with Zagreb plates. The check showed he had 2.09 promille of alcohol in his system.
This driver was also arrested and brought before the misdemeanor court. In this case, the police also proposed a fine of 1,320 euros and the revocation of the B-category driver's license for three months.
The misdemeanor court sentenced both drivers to 15 days in prison, but with a suspended sentence for a period of one year. This means they will not go to prison unless they commit a new criminal offense during the probation period that would activate the imposed sentence. In addition, both received a one-month driving ban for B-category motor vehicles.
The court outcome for both drunk drivers in Velika Gorica shows that the court, instead of the fines proposed by the police, decided to impose suspended prison sentences with the aim of special prevention.
