On Sunday, August 2, 2026, an attempt to smuggle drugs out of the country was thwarted at the Svilaj border crossing. At approximately 10:15 AM, in cooperation with customs officials, police stopped a car with Hungarian license plates driven by a 38-year-old Hungarian national.
A thorough inspection of the vehicle and luggage revealed 22.30 grams of marijuana and several ecstasy tablets. All the drugs found were seized, and the driver was issued an on-the-spot misdemeanor citation for violating the Law on Combating Drug Abuse. He was fined 663.61 euros.
In a completely separate incident, officers from the Border Customs Office at the Airport and Post intercepted a shipment containing more than 10 kilograms of marijuana. The package, which arrived from Canada, was flagged for a thorough inspection on July 29, 2026, during standard monitoring of import shipments.
Although the accompanying documentation stated that the contents were women's handbags and wallets, customs officers discovered something entirely different. Instead of the declared goods, the package concealed an item wrapped in black foil. Subsequent analysis confirmed it to be 10.54 kilograms of marijuana.
As reported by the Customs Administration, the seized drugs were handed over to MUP officers. They will continue with the criminal investigation and take all necessary legal steps.
