Marine police near Šipanska Luka caught a 52-year-old man operating a speedboat under the influence of alcohol, and the police have issued an appeal to all boaters.
Police officers from the Dubrovnik Marine Police Station stopped a speedboat in Šipanska Luka on the island of Šipan on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The intervention took place around 1:45 AM due to suspicion of illegal speeding, according to a statement from the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department.
An inspection revealed that the vessel was being operated by a 52-year-old Croatian citizen. A breathalyzer test measured his blood alcohol concentration at 1.73 g/kg.
Due to the risk of continuing to commit violations, the driver was held in police custody until fully sober. He will face misdemeanor charges for violating provisions of the Maritime Code.
In light of this incident, the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department has issued an appeal to all vessel operators, including speedboats, inflatable boats, jet skis, and other small craft. They urged them to strictly adhere to maritime regulations, especially those prohibiting operating under the influence of alcohol, safe speeding, and maintaining the required distance from the shore.
"The police will continue to consistently conduct checks and penalize offenders to ensure maximum safety at sea," the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department stated.
