Police Seize Another E-Scooter with Overpowered Motor

Police officers continued their intensified surveillance of electric scooters on Croatian roads. On the evening of Friday, August 4, 2026, two cases of vehicle seizure were recorded due to exceeding the legal motor power, and just an hour earlier, a serious accident occurred in which a 21-year-old female driver was injured.
At around 7:40 PM in Bjelovar, a police check stopped a 29-year-old man on an electric scooter. The inspection revealed that the vehicle had a motor power of 1.6 kW, which is nearly three times the legally permitted 0.6 kW for personal mobility devices. As a result, the scooter no longer falls into that category of vehicles prescribed by the Road Traffic Safety Act.
Such scooters can in practice reach speeds of approximately 45 to 60 kilometers per hour, while the legal limit for personal mobility devices is capped at 25 km/h. In addition to the overpowered motor, the 29-year-old was also riding without a protective helmet. The police issued him a mandatory misdemeanor fine, and the electric scooter was temporarily seized and stored in the police department's yard.
Later, at around 10:15 PM, in Cvjetna Street in Sveti Đurđ near Ludbreg, a 16-year-old was stopped. In this case as well, it was determined that his scooter, according to the provisions of the law, did not fall into the category of personal mobility devices nor was it classified into any vehicle category.
"Therefore, he was prohibited from participating in traffic on road surfaces intended for the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Due to the risk that the vehicle could be used again to commit a misdemeanor, the electric scooter was temporarily seized until a decision is made by the competent court," the police confirmed.
A misdemeanor charge will be filed against the 16-year-old with the competent court.
The seriousness of the issue with electric scooters was further highlighted by a traffic accident that occurred at around 7:10 PM in Zrinski Topolovac. According to the police report, a 21-year-old female driver on a downhill slope failed to adjust her speed to the road conditions, causing her to lose balance and fall onto the roadway. She sustained serious bodily injuries in the fall.
These incidents highlight the increasingly frequent problems associated with electric scooters on Croatian roads, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal limits and using protective equipment, especially a protective helmet.
