Police Weekend in Split Area: 199 Drivers Banned from Traffic

Intensified police checks over the past weekend in the Split-Dalmatia County resulted in 199 drivers being banned from traffic. Along with misdemeanor sanctions and driving bans, four of the most serious offenders ended up behind bars.
Over the past three days, police officers focused particularly on the most serious traffic offenses, primarily driving under the influence of alcohol and refusing to undergo drug testing. Among those arrested were repeat traffic offenders and individuals who got behind the wheel without a valid driver's license.
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, at around 1:30 AM, a 28-year-old Croatian citizen was stopped in Matoševa Street in Split while driving a van under the influence of alcohol. He was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 3.46 per mille and also refused a preliminary drug test. Additionally, police officers established that he was disturbing the peace of residents by shouting and pounding on his car while under the influence.
After being held at the police station until the effects of the intoxicants wore off, he was taken to court, which ordered his detention until August 8, 2026, after which he was handed over to prison.
A traffic accident occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at around 2 PM in the Majdan area of Solin. According to the police report, a 39-year-old driver failed to adjust his speed to the conditions, crossed into the oncoming lane, and collided with the side of another vehicle. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.
The driver was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 2.93 per mille, and it was also established that he was not wearing a seatbelt and did not possess a driver's license. Given that he already had a final conviction for drunk driving and another proceeding was pending against him, the police proposed a 60-day prison sentence, a fine, and a one-year driving ban. The court ordered his detention for 15 days, after which he was transferred to a prison facility.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, at around 11 PM in Kaštel Sućurac, a car driven by a 43-year-old man was stopped. A check revealed that his driver's license had been revoked due to accumulated negative points and that he could not take the driving test until July 2028. Despite this, he was driving again, and at that time, he had 1.61 per mille of alcohol in his system.
In the last three years, the man has been finally convicted three times for drunk driving, and two more proceedings for the same type of offense are ongoing against him. The police proposed a 60-day prison sentence and mandatory addiction treatment. The court ordered his detention for ten days, and he was then handed over to prison, assessing that previous penalties had not led to a change in his behavior and that there was a risk of reoffending.
Another serious traffic offense was recorded on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at around 1:30 AM in the town of Sičane, where a 45-year-old driver was stopped. He was found to have 1.70 per mille of alcohol, and it was also established that he had never taken a driving test for any vehicle category.
After sobering up, he was brought to court, where the police proposed a 30-day prison sentence and a three-month driving ban. The court ordered his detention for ten days, after which he was also transferred to prison.
