On the occasion of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian Veterans, Poreč once again paid tribute to those who laid down their lives for the foundations of a free Croatia. Representatives of the City, led by Mayor Loris Peršurić, laid wreaths and lit candles at the central cross in the town cemetery.
Alongside the mayor, the delegation included his deputies Nataša Basanić Ćuš and Ugo Musizza. The commemoration was also attended by representatives of numerous associations stemming from the Homeland War, including the Association of Volunteers and Veterans of the Homeland War, Poreč branch, the Istrian Association of Volunteers of the Homeland War, HVIDRA, as well as the Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of Poreč, the Poreč Police Station, and city councilors.
Mayor Peršurić highlighted the importance of this date on that occasion.
"This is a day of pride and gratitude, but also of remembrance for all veterans who laid down their lives in defense of the homeland,"he said. The prayer for the fallen veterans was led by Poreč parish priest Rev. Darko Zgrabljić, and those gathered observed a minute of silence in honor of all fallen veterans and fighters.
The commemorative program continued at the memorial to veterans of the Poreč region in Nova Vas, located at the crossroads toward Dekovići. There, Mirko Buić, president of the Poreč Association of Volunteers and Veterans of the Homeland War, addressed those present on behalf of the association. Buić was also one of the commanders in the military-police operation Storm.
Buić reminded attendees that veterans from the Poreč region took part in the key operation to liberate occupied areas and emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of all those who contributed to the defense of Croatia.
The celebration of Victory Day does not end here. On the holiday itself, Wednesday, August 5, 2026, representatives of Poreč veteran associations and the City of Poreč will join the central ceremonial parade to be held in Pula.
